CHAPTER 24

I grabbed the box of Joel’s stuff and stashed it in my car. Then I opened the passenger door for Trevor, and we took off.

I knew it was my own fault for leaving this stuff around, but still...it was my apartment. I should be able to put whatever I want in my apartment and not have a crazed ghost try to kill me for it. Right?

I absolutely had to find some way to get rid of Carlo. I had to.

I pulled into nearest cafe and waited in the parking lot until I was calmer. Then I leashed Trevor, grabbed Joel’s file and found a table outside in the shade. I ordered a soothing cup of Earl Gray for myself, and a cup of water for Trevor and we both sat sipping as I looked through the file Joel had brought me. It contained the police interview with Carlo's neighbor who'd called the police, as well as the interview with Audrey from her hospital room.

I started with the latter.

Audrey had told the cops that Carlo became insanely jealous when he found out that she slept with the director on Bounders. That same day, Carlo and the director had a fistfight and he fired Carlo, who stalked off the set. Audrey had hoped she was rid of him for good, but then she found his creepy stalker note in her purse – so she went to confront him that night, gun in hand. Or at least in purse. She brought the note back to him as well.

That stalker note. That creepy, creepy stalker note – which Carlo been quoting to himself obsessively while he pacing around on my roof. I will lie with you forever.

I exhaled loudly as I thought about it. The fact that he was constantly quoting lines from that note, made me wonder - was it his insane, crazy love for Audrey the thing that was keeping Carlo here on earth?

Maybe he didn’t even consciously know what his purpose was. But could his unconscious be giving me clues?

What if his unfinished business was finding Audrey and being with her forever – into all eternity?

Of course, the problem with that was, Audrey was dead. And Carlo obviously didn't realize it.

I knew what I had to do.

I had to help Carlo realize that Audrey was no longer here on this earthly plane. And that if he wanted to keep stalking her, he had to go find her on the other side. And ‘go towards the light.’

I thought about finding her obituary online and showing it to him, but that might not be dramatic enough to make a dent. Showing him her actual grave might work, but he didn't seem able to leave the bungalow.

Maybe if I could track down her gravesite, I could take a picture of it and show it to him, and he'd finally see the truth.

That seemed like my best option, so I used my phone to do an online search for Audrey Czerny’s obit. But all I found was a small blurb about her death, which didn’t mention where she was buried.
